Progressive Insurance Cancellation: How Exactly to Do it?

Progressive insurance cancellation is a process in which a company cancels the insurance for its current clients.

Policy cancellation is to remove the rider from your existing insurance policy if you experience a change in circumstance that would make you no longer eligible for the policy. This could be related to factors such as moving, changes in zip code, or getting married.

It’s important to research other companies before canceling progressive insurance, so you can find an affordable monthly payment in your area that has a good rating with consumer groups and trusted names.

If you are thinking about cancelling progressive insurance, this article is for you. In this article I will share how to cancel progressive insurance, what the different types of progressive cancellation are, and what benefits progressive cancellation provides so you can make an informed decision about whether or not you should go ahead and cancel your policy.

No one likes to have insurance companies take their money every month, but if you’re getting sick of your premiums going up, there are a few things you can do to get out of the contract.

Insurance cancellation

First, if you’re thinking about cancelling your policy, keep this in mind: Cancellation isn’t easy, and it won’t eliminate your premiums just like that. In fact, it’s not always possible to get out of a Progressive policy.

There are certain situations where you can get out of the contract, but in general it involves sending a letter or making a phone call to Progressive and explaining why you want to cancel the policy.

Depending on the situation and your explanation, Progressive may let you switch to another rate plan, or they might just end the contract without charging any cancellation fees. Generally speaking though, there are two different types of cancellation with this company.

Types of cancellation of progressive insurance policy

There are normally two types of progressive insurance policy cancellation: 1. A complete policy cancellation and 2. Just reducing your rate plane.

A complete policy cancellation is basically ending your contract with progressive and not continuing it. In order to do this, you would have to call them or write a letter to the company. That says something like: “I’m writing this letter to inform you that I am cancelling my contract because I no longer want progressive insurance coverage.” This will cancel your policy.

The second type of progressive cancellation, just reducing your rate plan, is applicable when you want to stay with the company, but reduce your rates by switching from one rate plan to another. Under this type of cancellation, you would have to call customer service or send a letter to the company saying something like: “I’m writing this letter to inform you that I am cancelling my Progressive policy because I no longer want the plan I’m currently on.”

Most popular ways of progressive policy cancellation

  • By Phone

Contact a licensed insurance agent. Telephone cancellations usually take effect on the same day, or you can schedule the date when your coverage ends. Be prepared to provide your policy number, name, date of birth, and Social Security number. Depending on your state of residence, you may also need proof of new insurance, plate forfeiture or bill of sale.

  • In Person

In addition, you can cancel your insurance policy in person. Come into your local Progressive branch and speak with one of our agents.

  • Through Mail

In some states, you will need to sign a document to cancel your auto insurance policy, but we think this is the easiest way. You can use Progressive’s form to request a cancellation or write your own letter with the same information.

  • Online Cancellation

Unless you live in a state that allows it, you cannot cancel your Progressive auto insurance policy online. However, you can cancel your policy conveniently by contacting your local Progressive agent. You’ll need to provide identification to verify it.

What is progressive insurance cancellation fee?

If you decide that you want Progressive to cancel your policy altogether, there will be a progressive insurance cancellation fee. Progressive’s cancellation fees depend on a number of factors, including your state’s insurance laws, how far along you are in your policy term, and how often you pay your premiums.

The longer your contract is and the more money they’re taking from your account, the higher your cancellation fee will be.

The cancellation fee will be determined by the company, and you won’t have any say in how much it is. Various customers have reported different experiences with Progressive’s cancellation fees. Some paid a flat fee of $50 to $65, while others paid a flat fee of 10% of the outstanding premium.

Therefore, the only way to avoid the fee is to not cancel your policy.

Fortunately, Progressive doesn’t charge any cancellation fee if you want to cancel your policy online.

Now that you know what a progressive auto cancellation fee is and what it’s called, let’s go over how to get out of your policy if you’re dead-set on doing it. Remember though: Cancellation isn’t easy, so there’s a good chance Progressive won’t be too happy with you.

More about progressive insurance policy cancellation online

Online cancellation is only available in certain states, and many states require you to notify the DMV when canceling or changing your auto insurance, so check with your state’s policies or ask your agent if you need to do this. But you are able to terminate it by phone at any time.

You can fill up cancellation form of your progressive insurance online. It’s a whole lot easier to complete your progressive insurance cancellation if you’re not at your computer, but it still doesn’t hurt to give it a shot.

To fill up online form, go to their website and click the link for Cancellation Coverage in the top right corner that says Contact Us. After that click on “Complete Cancellation Coverage” in the drop-down menu. You will then be prompted with a form asking you what type of cancellation you want to do: Complete or Partial cancellation.

After filling out all the relevant information with “Complete Cancellation Coverage” selected, click on “Submit” at the bottom of the page. When you’ve submitted the form, you can speak with a representative and arrange for the cancellation to take effect immediately or at a future date.

How long does it take progressive to cancel online?

Insurance progressive

Normally, it takes a few days to process progressive auto cancellation online. It can take anywhere from one day to two weeks depending on the employee you speak with on the phone and how busy Progressive is at that time. When you go online or call in, you have to provide your policy number, so if you have your policy number saved somewhere (which I recommend trying to do) that will speed up the cancellation process as well.

So, you’ve decided to cancel your progressive policy, but want to make sure they don’t charge you a cancellation fee. Fortunately, Progressive doesn’t charge any cancellation fee if you want to cancel your policy online.

However, if you’re cancelling a policy that isn’t online-based, or if it’s a phone call only policy (not an online one), they will charge you a cancellation fee. In this case, it’s usually $20 or what ever the rate plan of your current plan is.

Final lines,

You should not cancel a Progressive policy unless you have another one that has a reasonable price.

Otherwise, you’re just going to be sticking with paying the high premiums even if Progressive lets you reduce your plan or totally cancel the policy.

If you do decide to go through with a cancellation and drop it for good, make sure that you let Progressive know about any other policies you may have with other insurance companies as well so that they can cancel those too.

Now that you know how to get out of progressive insurance, you then need to know how great progressive is. I’m kind of joking there! But their rates are cheap and they don’t charge cancellation fees if your cancellation was justified.
